Stop Guessing at Brand Shoots: How to build a Pre-Shoot Questionnaire That Sets You Up for Success

6 min read

Hey brand photographer! Can I let you in on a little secret? The strongest, most impactful brand images don’t just happen by showing up on shoot day and hoping for the best. They are strategically mapped out long before you ever pick up your camera. Here’s how to build a pre-shoot questionnaire to turn your next session from “just a few photos for my new website” into strategic, storytelling assets.

Start with the brand, not the photos

To kick things off, get clear on who your client is and who their work is meant to reach. It may be tempting to start by building out a beautiful mood board (I know the artist in you is itching to hop on Pinterest!), but this step ensures you don’t just capture pretty portraits. You want to create intentional, on-brand visuals that actually make a tangible impact for your client’s brand or business.

To get there, you’ll need to go beyond surface-level demographics and dig into psychographics by asking identity-driven questions like “What are their hobbies and interests?” Here, you’ll uncover personality and lifestyle cues you can actually use when shaping the creative direction of the shoot.

Build a Beautiful Business.

For example, say your client is a luxury realtor in Palm Beach and their audience is into tropical travel and hot pilates! Now you’re not just picturing 45-year-old Lisa in Florida, you’re getting a true feel for the lifestyle she enjoys. One that might translate on camera as crisp linen sets, gorgeous golden hour lighting, and lifestyle-driven imagery that feels lived-in, but still speaks to her aspirational identity.

Once you’ve explored their audience, it’s time to shift the focus inward to your client’s convictions and what their brand stands for.

Do they have a specific way of doing something that most people in their industry would disagree with, but they swear by? What’s the ultimate transformation they help their clients achieve, and why does it matter to them? These are the questions that help you unlock the deeper “why” behind their work and the secret sauce that sets them apart from the rest.

#ShootProofPro-tip:  When brainstorming what questions to include in your pre-shoot questionnaire, use this AI prompt to get you started. You can drop it into ChatGPT, Claude, or whatever tool you prefer:

“I’m a brand photographer for [describe, with specificity, the clients you serve]. I’m building out a pre-shoot questionnaire to help me craft the most strategic images possible for [name your client’s brand/business and what they do]. Give me 5–10 targeted questions to help me understand who my client is and who their business serves.”

Translate insight into a visual language

Now that you’re clear on who the images should speak to, this next section of your questionnaire is all about defining how your client’s brand shows up visually. This is where you’ll get a sense of their overall vibe and the many ways it comes to life across their brand presence, like their website, socials, and anywhere else they’re visible.

Of course, you’ll want to cover all the expected touch points. Whatever platform you’re using to build out your questionnaire, be sure to include a space where your client can directly upload their brand assets and collateral. This keeps everything in one place, makes it easier for them to share, and gives you a streamlined way to review it all once it’s submitted.

Before wrapping up, don’t forget to go a layer deeper by tapping into the intangible elements that characterize your client’s brand. One of my personal favorites? Asking them to share 2-3 Instagram accounts they follow whose presence and strategy really resonate, giving you a window straight into their taste, and the kind of visuals they’re drawn to.

#ShootProofPro-tip: Ready to take it a step further? Have your client create a Pinterest board with 8-10 images that reflect their vision for their shoot. The key here is to encourage them to think conceptually—not just in terms of straightforward poses and outfit ideas—but any visuals that reflect the essence of their brand. For example, they might save fun textures and wallpaper that capture their personality or even beautifully designed interiors that fit their brand vibe.

Create with purpose (not just for aesthetics)

Finally, it’s time to get into the nitty gritty details of how your client plans to employ their brand images. Getting specific here will not only help you determine photo composition and orientation while shooting. It will ensure every frame is tied to a defined purpose.

You’ll want to get as granular as possible by mapping out every use case so you step into shoot day with a clear strategy in mind. A great way to streamline this? Include a comprehensive check box list of potential platforms your client needs content for, like Facebook ads, lead magnets, etc, and make sure they check all that apply.

This is also your chance to “wow” your client by prompting them to think beyond the moment and into future opportunities they can maximize right now.

Are there any press features on the horizon that they’ll need a polished headshot for?

What kind of photos are they constantly scrambling to post that you should take note of?

Your ability to not only capture powerful, personality-driven portraits, but step in as a strategist is what elevates you from a straightforward photographer to a brand partner they’ll go the distance with.

#ShootProofPro-tip: At the end of your questionnaire, add a brief “just for fun” section with questions like, “What coffee order are you currently obsessed with?” or “What music are you loving right now?” Then, show up on shoot day with their favorite iced caramel latte in hand and their 90’s playlist queued up in the background. It’s a small detail, but it sets the tone for an experience they won’t forget.

Your new shoot-day advantage

And there you have it! Everything you need to build a pre-shoot questionnaire that brings strategy and purpose to every shoot.

Get clients. Get paid. Get happy.
